The National Association for the Specialty Food Trade has announced their Outstanding Retailers of the Year for 2004. Six judges selected seven winners out of a field of 325 submissions. The West Point Market, a specialty food legend, was selected and is featured in the June 2004 issue of Specialty Food magazine. West Point Market, whose main goal is to make sure every guest leaves completely satisfied, began its journey to becoming a specialty foods giant in the 1960's when now owner Russ Vernon began to change a neighborhood grocery into a gourmet's delight. The West Point Market and Russ Vernon have received national and international attention. Russ has been the recipient of various awards such as the Silver Spoon Award for Achievement from the National Association of Specialty Foods Trade in 1985, Akron Sales & Marketing Director of the Year in 1993, as well as being named Small Businessman of the Year in 1993. In 1995 he was an Ohio Delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business. More recently, in 2001 Russ was an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Finalist. He was entered as an inaugural member of the Ohio Grocers Hall of Fame and was also honored with a Northeast Ohio Success Award. In 2002 the West Point Market received the Alice in Wonderland Award from Foods from Britain. The West Point Market has been featured in various articles acclaiming the market in such newspapers as the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Washington Post, and the New York Times. The West Point Market has also been featured in such gourmet food magazines as Food & Wine and Bon Appetit. The market was also recognized on a Good Morning America segment. West Point Market was featured in Dr. Leonard Berry’s book, On Great Service. West Point Market’s human resource practices were featured in Bruce Tulgan’s book, Winning the Talent Wars.
